Recital Series at St. Barnabas Church

Information from Secretary of St. Barnabas Choir

The second St Barnabas Concert Series, taking place this spring in the new St Barnabas Church in Dulwich begins on Sunday 5 April at 7.30 pm with an Organ Recital by William McVicker, Director of Music at St Barnabas, whose CD 'Great Organ Classics', part of the Classic FM 'The Full Works' series, spent several weeks in the Classic FM charts last autumn.

The recital, on Palm Sunday, will give fans of the CD their first opportunity to hear the best-selling organist playing live on the church's widely-acclaimed new pipe organ, built by Kenneth Tickell & Company of Northampton, which is featured on the recording. It marks the first anniversary of the instrument's dedication.

Entitled 'Epiphany to Pentecost', the programme takes the audience on a journey through the church's year. 'Each season is represented by a selection of pieces,' says McVicker, 'and I shall be explaining their significance as the recital proceeds. We begin with the Prelude and Fugue in e minor BWV 548 by JS Bach and two settings of the Epiphany carol Wie shön leuchst der Morgenstern (How brightly shines the Morning star), by Telemann and JC Bach, and end with two settings of Komm heiliger Geist Herre Gott (Come, Holy Ghost), by Telemann and JS Bach. The recital will also include works by Walther, Krebs, Scheidt, and Buxtehude, along with Messiaen's L'Ascension.'

Proceeds from the Concert Series, which also includes a recital by the Chilingirian String Quartet on10 May and a Gala Concert by the Rosebery Orchestra, conducted by William McVicker, with soloists Sarah Leonard (soprano) and Norman Harper (organ) on 14 June, will go towards the St Barnabas Building Appeal.

Tickets price £5 (£3 concessions) can be obtained from St Barnabas Parish Office, 40 Calton Avenue, SE21 7DG, Tel 0181 693 1524, Fax 0181 693 0203 (Please enclose an SAE). Season tickets for all three concerts in the series are also available, costing £18 (£10 concessions).
